During a familiarisation trip and subsequent extension, we got to know diverse Peru and some of its highlights. This friendly country is colourful and original, with great landscapes from the Andes to the Pacific, an interesting cultural history and a cuisine that is among the best in the world. The Machu Pichu and Sacsayhuamán Inca sites were even more impressive than their reputations suggested. Cusco, located at 3.400m in the Andes, is a kind of open-air museum, and Ceviche and Pisco Sours were really addictive!
The journey from Europe to Lima is indeed far, and you need at least 6 days for a stay. But the trip is worthwhile for all those who love nature and culture. Luxury trains from Belmond and top hotels, even with oxygen-enriched rooms (because of the high altitude) provide an infrastructure which is also suitable for high-end meetings and incentives.
Magic Amazon
Do you fancy a rustic and adventurous extension trip, and remember the cult movie Fitzcarraldo? We flew to northern Iquitos, a city in the middle of the jungle, cut off from any streets, and explored the Amazon upstream. However, we did not draw a ship over a mountain with Indians, as Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog once did.
But we did fish piranhas, swing like Tarzan on lianas, spy river dolphins, and listen to a jungle concert at night. There is no internet connection. So, no shopping on Amazon – but much more exciting: swimming in the Amazon!
